Can't open case files

I'm a total beginner in this. I was trying to load the `.ai` files and `.svg` files in Adobe Illustrator but all failed. `.ai` ended up with a pop-up window saying importing as a text file, and `.svg` resulted in `"This SVG is invalid"`. Is it possible this is related to some version issue?
