I'm KF0MLB, I started this project after seeing multiple posts on Reddit groups asking why we depend on old websites for certain information, and why we depend on specific websites for Repeater data is the website owner claims he owns all our submitted data. I have no skin in that game or any arguments, I wanted to start a community project where anyone can see and copy the data. Because it's hosted on Github, it may be drawing to a more developer-esque crowd, but I think anyone in amateur radio is technical enough to learn GIT and Github. This is the second iteration of this project, the first never left my personal Gitea repo. I started writing this as a MongoDB database project with FastAPI doing all the CRUD operations. On a drive home one night I had a thought, "If I'm paying for the database, then I own the data...". Even though the API itself would be open, the database was still closed off. Therefore I scrapped that code and restarted it as a local file "database" of json files. Everyone can see the data in Github, make Pull Requests to submit new repeaters, or add onto the site code. I hope to get some support and bring on more people interested in contributing. |
