Serve pages from `public/` instead of `gh-pages`

When this repo was set up initially, Github did not support serving sites from a directory subtree. Looks like that is supported now, which would be much easier to manage than the `git subtree` magic we use today to deploy to a separate branch.

I think we should switch to this approach, to clean up this mess a bit 😅
