Question: Running Labelle in a Docker container

I have a DYMO LabelManager PnP that I have successfully got to work with Labelle. I now want to put my small solution into a Docker container to be able to run it off of my Synology NAS. What do I need to give the container access to in order for Labelle to be able to identify the printer correctly?

I could supply what I've built as a simple web ui if you want to. It's quite simple Python/Flask and a simple html form.

Hi @giplet, I'd follow the example in https://github.com/labelle-org/labelle/blob/main/.devcontainer. This is for a development container, so you'll want to strip out most of it.

For CLI args to get the right permissions, see runArgs from devcontainer.json. For the apt-get dependencies, see Dockerfile.

The devcontainers base image will be very bloated for your purposes. I'd recommend choosing something like python:3.13-bullseye instead.

If you're up for it, it'd be great to get a reference Dockerfile and some brief docs for this! 😉

I got it working no problem. I'm using 3.12 bookworm base, copied the dependencies from Dockerfile and added -v /dev/bus/usb:/dev/bus/usb --device-cgroup-rule="c 189:* rw" when starting the container.

Would you mind sharing your complete Dockerfile (possibly slimmed down to just labelle) and Docker command if you get the chance?

I could not figure out how to remove the flask part, so I have kept that within the solution.

I build this with
sudo docker build -t labelle_web .
And then start the container using
sudo docker run -d -p 8180:5000 -v /dev/bus/usb:/dev/bus/usb --device-cgroup-rule="c 189:* rw" --name labelle_web labelle_web
You can now access a small webui on http://localhost:8180/
