Causes might be:
A lock (blocking read) on the message pipe producing improper wait?
High network traffic causing strange interactions, flooding the pipe, perhaps.

81845b4 might help if it's the second cause, since it reads datagrams more eagerly than before. It's probably not the first cause, since if 2 threads try to lock the same mutex repeatedly it should cycle back and forth rather than give one thread all the access, and threads shouldn't be holding locks for any long amount of time.
