Ligature Handling

Some sequence of characters are not displayed as a sequence of their glyphs, but can be combined into new glyphs (a ligature, see FontMetrics).

However, this does not seem to happen with the usual fonts in English.

It does actually happen with some fonts in English. For example, Photoshop with Verdana 16 removes a column of pixels between "Ve". A correction was added to deal with this type of ligature.
