@jeffkl what is the best way to implement this? abstract out serialization / deserialization parts and keep the domain logic intact is one way i could think of. it's hypothetical as i'm not familiar with the code

The best-supported, most compatible way will be to use the forthcoming solution library, but that means waiting.

The library is https://github.com/microsoft/vs-solutionpersistence; I think the work here would be to reference that NuGet package and expose the format selection gestures.

What is the status of this? We'd like to switch to SLNX in prep for upcoming .NET 10 and VS2026.

The changes to use the new library are in place; however, #644 requires additional testing. I will prioritize these changes towards the end of this week and aim mid-next week for providing .slnx support.

Note: Still in progress, there were more bugs detected with #644 when testing with different solution files (particularly with nested projects) and noticeable path differences which would break for existing solution files. This is currently a lower priority item and will need more cycles in coming weeks to investigate.

for the time being, i've updated ~500 project in dotnet/runtime repo using slngen as an intermediate step to dotnet sln migrate, dotnet/runtime#115818 see changes in src/libraries/slngen.proj.
