Error using read_hdr

Hi! I'm using spm12 and i'm getting this error with a .nii file:

code: spm12/@nifti/private/read_hdr.m

Error using read_hdr
Error reading header file "path-to-file" ..... function "read_hdr" at line 39.

i'm using matlab under macosx intel bigsur
