I just discovered your project, after being frustrated by a (years) earlier implementation of the same idea. First, well done! I do a lot of maps and scaled projects and have always found the inability to then accurately measure on screen frustrating.
In that vein, while your ability to rotate the ruler 90 degrees is cool, it would be even cooler to be able to place the ruler, then grab and rotate it to follow and determine a twisty line's real distance. (Imagine trying to determine the actual distance of a mountain road on Google Maps with a stick ruler.) Another idea would be to make the ruler "bendable" so it would conform to the line without losing accuracy, kind of like a bendable artists curve.
