Redesigning the ORD landing page

Usability issue: Current landing page only displays logo

Scientific databases such as PubChem & ChEMBL have the search bar on the landing page and is prominently placed for the user to begin searching right away. Additionally, information about the database (e.g., number of datapoints) is placed below the search bar.

Fixes:

  • Place search bar in center
  • Add information about ORD below the search bar

Usability issue: Current search page gives the user advanced options from the start

Search bars for PubChem & ChEMBL are general purpose (SMILES, common name, etc.). Afterwards the user can decide to do more advanced searching.

Fixes:

  • Search bar is initially general purpose (dataset name, reaction ID, etc.)
  • Add draw option next to search bar

Usability issue: Redundant searching between Browse page and Search page

User story: One of my collaborators began to search in the Browse page and complained about the lack of search functionality, not realizing that there was a separate Search page.

Fixes:

  • Remove Browse page
  • One consolidated search bar
