'Fatal Exception of type "Error"' on Wiki when loading Category:Data_sources

The Contribute map data page links to "Potential Data sources", which goes to a category page that errors out here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Data_sources

That page errors out with (for example)

The page source is pretty simple, but includes some templates/extensions/something that are involving things well beyond my knowledge to fix, so for now I'm just reporting it.

Tested on Firefox on Ubuntu, in case it matters, but validated by others as well in the OSMUS Slack. I mentioned the linking page just to note that there's some prominent direction to that page.

This error seems to occur on any category page that includes a file gallery, such as https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Guide.

Some users on the wiki and forum also report getting internal errors showing some pages in the main namespace, such as https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dridge and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:service=parking_aisle. The common denominator seems to be that these pages include a thumbnail of a PDF from Commons. Via the MediaWiki API, we can confirm that PDFs are also causing the error on the category page in the original report.

We recently migrated from Commons’ 404 handler to the Commons API in openstreetmap/chef@ffa2bb0. These reports only started coming in on the 12th, which is a few days later, so I don’t know if it’s related.

Those PDFs (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:25kOS_Index_Graphical.pdf https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:25kOS_maps_Held.pdf https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Gu%C3%ADa_telef%C3%B3nica_Polic%C3%ADa_Nacional_de_Paraguay.pdf ) are local files, so in theory changing ForeignFileRepo settings should not have affected them. Hard to say what's actually going on without someone looking at the logs though.

I am seeing those 500 errors on https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Faltprospekt-OpenStreetMap-Impression.pdf and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Mlm-designdoc.pdf . This also affects the OSM Foundation wiki, see https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Organised_Editing_Guidelines ! These all worked on the 11th around 4am and were broken on the 12h around 4am (my link checker detected and logged these problems).

In fact, the error appears on every page that includes a PDF (preview), including both category pages and content pages. As a result, many pages are affected and are currently unavailable. Since it is the same with PDFs stored in OSM Wiki (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dridge with https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=File:Natural%3Dridge_caution_example.pdf) I don't see the issue connected to Commons.

Would it be possible to temporarily disable the PDF previewing to get back the wiki pages? If yes then this would be a helpful step, I think.

PDF working again because I've disabled PdfHandler. I will re-enable once fixed upstream by Mediawiki.
