Custom Notification Sound

Hello,

Is it possible to set a custom sound (an audio file or a ringtone) for selected events when they begin? 'cause my current notification is a simple "ding-dong" which isn't heard and it's easy to miss an important event. (For that functionality I always liked good old button phones.)
