Is there a way to not use the country flags and just display the name of the languages instead?

Question or perhaps feature request. We would like to display just the language names (e.g. "Spanish | English") rather than country flags. In our case, since our project is focused on Latin America, it makes no sense for us to display the flag of Spain or of any particularly country. Is there any convenient way to do this, in the CSS or plugin php? Ideally we would display "Spanish | English | etc..." when the site is viewed in English, and "español | inglés | etc..." when displayed in Spanish.
