NIfTI-1 Specification Conformance

This document describes Nifti.NET's conformance to the NIfTI-1 Data Format specification and the comprehensive testing implemented to verify compliance.

Overview

Nifti.NET implements the NIfTI-1 Data Format specification with comprehensive validation and conformance testing. The library includes:

  • Complete specification validation against all NIfTI-1 requirements
  • Comprehensive test suite with 100+ individual conformance tests
  • Edge case handling for malformed and extreme input data
  • Command-line validation tool for checking file conformance
  • Detailed validation reporting with errors, warnings, and informational messages

Specification Compliance

Header Structure Compliance

Header Size: Exactly 348 bytes as required
Magic Numbers: Proper validation of "ni1\0" and "n+1\0"
Field Layout: All fields positioned according to specification
Endianness Detection: Automatic detection via sizeof_hdr field

Data Type Compliance

All Standard Types: Support for all NIfTI-1 data types (DT_UINT8 through DT_RGBA32)
Bitpix Validation: Correct bits-per-pixel for each data type
Type Consistency: Validation that datatype and bitpix fields match
Byte Order: Proper handling of big-endian and little-endian data

Dimension Compliance

Dimension Limits: 1-7 dimensions as specified
Spatial Dimensions: X, Y, Z must be positive integers
Temporal Dimension: Fourth dimension for time series
Vector Dimensions: Fifth+ dimensions for multi-component data

Coordinate System Compliance

Transform Codes: All NIFTI_XFORM_* constants match specification
Quaternions: Unit quaternion validation (b²+c²+d² ≤ 1)
Affine Transforms: Support for srow_x/y/z matrices
Pixel Dimensions: Proper handling of pixdim array

File Format Compliance

Single File (.nii): vox_offset ≥ 352, preferably multiple of 16
Dual File (.hdr/.img): vox_offset = 0 for header files
Compression: Proper gzip handling for .gz files
Extensions: Support for header extensions when present

Units and Scaling Compliance

Spatial Units: NIFTI_UNITS_METER, NIFTI_UNITS_MM, NIFTI_UNITS_MICRON
Temporal Units: NIFTI_UNITS_SEC, NIFTI_UNITS_MSEC, etc.
Unit Encoding: Proper bit-field encoding in xyzt_units
Data Scaling: scl_slope and scl_inter handling

Intent Code Compliance

Statistical Codes: All statistical intent codes (NIFTI_FIRST_STATCODE to NIFTI_LAST_STATCODE)
Non-Statistical Codes: ESTIMATE, LABEL, VECTOR, etc.
Parameter Validation: Appropriate parameter counts for statistical tests
