Add Tailscale as possible VPN provider

Currently, when I run sudo tailscale up, Tailscale connects to my network but the VPN quick setting tile shows "No (VPN) connections" and the tooltip shows "VPN disconnected".

Would it be possible to add Tailscale (or any other Zero Trust Network like Twingate)?

Yeah, we currently only show/handle VPN connections managed by NetworkManager. In theory we could support Tailscale but I don’t think it’s a great fit as it stand. Tailscale doesn’t have a dbus API so we’d need to shell out to the tailscale cli and poll its status etc.

I think this is better handled with a custom widget, i.e a small script that executes the tailscale cli and exposes the status to vibepanel.

I’m also working on making our custom widget compatible with the Waybar custom module format which should allow existing Waybar modules like these to be used in vibepanel:
