Fix intermittently failing timeline tests

The timeline tests can fail because the executable multiple actions against the timeline and depend on the timing.  These should be fixed.

One possible fix is to test STM versions of the functions and wrap them inside atomically to guarantee no ticks happen during the essential part of the test.
