This OS image does not work with current Pi 3 A+ hardware #7
Description
I tried to get this working for months trying all manor of hardware. No dice. I had it working in 2022 on a Pi 3 A+ but gave that one away.
I got my hands on an old pi 3 model B 1.2. It booted right away.
Something has changed with the hardware and the pi 3 A+ blinks four times slow and seven times fast and wont boot with this image. Can't terminal serial because it wont boot at all. The 3 A+ hardware works fine with Raspberry Pi OS. I have two pi 3 A+ the odds of both being bad are slim.
I think its something to do with this

Rasteri can you help with this? If I drag a current start.elf from 32bit lite it blinks 3 times at various timing like its trying to load and hangs.
Def pointing to something with the start.elf.

I used a legacy image start.elf. The 32 bit bullseye lite and it boots finally but without the music. I will try some older start.elfs to get the music working.

Yeah it looks like they changed the hardware a bit or at least how these files communicate with the pi. Download the Raspberry Pi imager and write an SD with the legacy 32 bit lite bullseye released 2024-10-22. Copy over and overwrite start.elf and fixup.dat to the Rasteri doom image root written to a second card and this seems to fix everything.
I'm going to leave this issue opened for now in case this ends up breaking something else. I seem to be having trouble loading up .wad files but that might be something I'm doing wrong. Feel free to chime in if anyone knows more about what's going on under the hood.
