Cannot install on fresh Ubuntu 16.04 - certbot-auto deprecated

The latest installation script does not work on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 image on AWS - it errors out when installing an SSL cert:

Skipping bootstrap because certbot-auto is deprecated on this system.
Your system is not supported by certbot-auto anymore.
Certbot cannot be installed.
Please visit https://certbot.eff.org/ to check for other alternatives.
