Applying two different stat_ld_annotations to double-plotted actogram  

I am hoping to create a double-plotted actogram with two separate light-dark annotations that correspond to when my flies are under 12:12 LD and free running. My current solution is just to add several geom_rect() layers to the plot. However, I'm wondering if there is a simpler approach?
