Merge to Pulseaudio project / convert to module

This project is really useful. I didn't found a related issue on Pulseaudio tracker, so a filed one. I wonder if you consider adapting it to became a Pulseaudio module. Or maybe adding its features to pavucontrol. Here is an intro about how to collaborate. Would be really great to have this feature build-in to PA!

I do not really have any plans for it. The code is basically just copied and pasted together from pulseaudio examples I found on the web (a line here, a line there) and has to make some assumptions as well (such as setting a client volume to be stereo if no channels are set yet).

To me the most natural place to offer its functionality would be in pavucontrol and its command line siblings. I have no idea how those are internally structured though and how hard it would be to add the required callbacks to them to tie together changes in a slider to volume changes.

Turning pa_volume into a "proper" standalone tool by e.g. improving its command line handling would certainly be much faster.

The license of pa_volume is GPL which seems the same as pavucontrol so anyone is free to copy the code in there.

I'd hope this gets merged somewhere other than pavucontrol directly, as that would mean pulsemixer wouldn't have this functionality.

Maybe. I have not really gone after merging it anywhere. It may also not be required for very much longer. It seems that the pipewire framework (https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/pipewire-pulse) which can also serve as a PulseAudio replacement (and did for a while on my Debian system) already has built in functionality to edit this metadata: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/wikis/Migrate-PulseAudio#user-content-module-stream-restore though the syntax seems a bit low level (basically one would run pw-metadata without arguments first to learn about everything available then construct a string like the one shown there):
