As an additional backup method, one could use libvirt's blockcopy, resulting only in a brief halt of the VM while RAM is being backed up, leaving the VM online while the disks are copied.
Though more elegant live backup solutions are planned for future libvirt releases (which first have to arrive on stable distro releases), this would lower the interruption duration for backup until then.
