Best Data Loss story

I just bought my first "real" server from a co-worker. Dual Xeons 4u the whole thing! He even threw in some old Hard Drives. The PSU was modular and he gave me the bag of cables. I was setting up and moving my existing Unraid over. I had at the time 3 of my own Drives 9TB of data. I had amasses a collection of movies ripping DVDs and scouring the old Internet back in high school (2000s) Had alot of data and my personal photos etc. I plugged in all the Drives and got the SATA Power and I looked at the cables in the bag and ones already being used. I thought these cables don't match up. these are not the right PSU cables. I thought about it. I went back and forth with my co-worker to verify they were the correct SATA Power cables. HE said yeah I THINK they are the right ones. I was so excited to get this thing up and running...... I hit the power button heard THE sound and smelled burning. I just fried all 9TB of hard drives. I was beyond sad but knew it was my fault ( I knew better). I even sent them to a clean room to see if it just a board swap on the drive. They were totally done. I had to start over.
