I had success in using this, but I don't get how it is supposed to automatically add the games to my Linux steam client.

Well, the plan is to eventually add shortcuts to Linux Steam, but it's not implemented yet!

More specifically and technically, Steam stores the list of shortcuts as a VDF file (in the binary format), and it should be straightforward to modify it - once code to parse and generate binary files is written.
