I have struggled with understanding the host building process for years.

The Microsoft documentation fails to provide any kind of decent overview of why the host building process is designed the way it is and how it works. It's almost as if they never expected, or wanted, anyone other than Microsoft engineers to use the damn thing, except in a cookie-cutter manner.
