Plugin hangs configuration page and send test page, crashes browser

not sure what's going on, but whenever I enable this plugin and save the smtp settings on my config page, my browser hangs and random tabs start to crash. If I can manage to escape the config page, the settings seem to have saved, but the same result happens when I try to send a test email.
