We used to have a way to get the number of commits from the tag which is now disappeared.

New additions to master will be over writing the stable files in the conda channel.

Suggestion to use

git rev-list  `git rev-list --tags --no-walk --max-count=1`..HEAD --count

which returns the number of commits since last tag, at this line.
