Bringing some of the improvements back upstream

Hi!

I took over maintaining upstream mtd-utils in 2016 after doing a lot of cleanup and work around the build system. The latest upstream release is 2.1.1 and a good deal of things have changed since version 1.5.x that your fork is based on.

Nevertheless, this fork seems to contain a few improvements that still didn't make it upstream yet, such as 967e406 which was recently mentioned on the mailing list and brought this fork to my attention.

I would love to merge those upstream, but some of the commits here (such as the one I mentioned above) require a little bit of work porting and as I am not familiar with all of the code base, I think the original authors who understand the code and the intentions of their changes might be better suited to do this.

Hi David,

Talk about long forgotten things, I didn't even remember I had this repository to my name.
In any case, I would sure like but I can't say I remember too much about the code, though I remember the original intention. How do you propose to continue? Should I try to dig in my notes and refactor this code for the latest release or do you want to do it? I think it would take me a week or so to propose an updated patch.
