How to deploy Firebase Admin service account credentials file

In the documentation we are supposed to create a service account and reference to the file in the nuxt.config.ts file. We are also supposed not to include this file in the git repository, for security reasons. How do we safely deploy without including in the repository?

I have read this article regarding a google cloud keyfile and deployment to vercel. Basically, they convert the file into a base64 string and put it in the .env variables. Then read back in and parse to JSON. I tried the following, but it does not work.

        serviceAccount: JSON.parse(Buffer.from(process.env.FIREBASE_SERVICE_ACCOUNT, "base64").toString().replace(/\n/g,"")) 
    }
}

The FIREBASE_SERVICE_ACCOUNT contains the base64 encoded string converted from the credentials.json file.

What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated!
