how to generate vcd?

hey! i was curious how you generated your vcd files, particularly which compiler (iverilog, verilator), which distribution you're on (linux, mac, windows), and which version of iverilog/verilator you're using. i'm currently trying to generate vcd on m1 mac silicon osX, and running into issues. would appreciate it if you explained your process! thank you so much in advance :)
