I second this as well, apparently it's due to updates to grep? I recently updated to Ubuntu 14.04

OK after taking it to the extreme of downgrading grep, I found that you have to add an extra line:

export LC_ALL=C

On Arch Linux here. I didn't have to downgrade grep, but I did also have to do export LC_ALL=C.

Yep, that's what I found out too... sorry for not updating this. I'll leave the issue open in case someone has the same problem.
