Lumina is an independent initiative design for Microsoft 365 Copilot based on public product context, public documentation, public competitive positioning, and modeled assumptions documented in this repo.
Lumina is an initiative dossier for a multimodal document intelligence layer inside Microsoft 365 Copilot.
The focus is narrow on purpose: questions whose answers depend on the relationship between narrative text and visual evidence inside the same document. The user is not asking for a summary. The user is asking whether the chart supports the claim, what the table implies in context, or which figure the answer actually came from.
Public Microsoft materials already show Copilot working across documents and grounded answers. Lumina targets the harder product problem that sits on top of those foundations: reliable cross-modal reasoning with visible source grounding, clear uncertainty handling, and rollout discipline strong enough for document-heavy enterprise work.
- The wedge is not generic "document understanding." It is high-trust tasks such as claim verification, extraction with context, cross-reference resolution, and contradiction detection.
- Prompt changes alone are unlikely to carry the initiative. Context architecture, document structure mapping, and answer grounding have to move first.
- Fine-tuning matters, but only after the product proves it can retrieve and present the right document evidence.
- The business case is strongest where verification speed and trust determine whether Copilot is used for real analytical work or only for low-risk drafting.
| Time | Path | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| 3 min | Initiative Brief | The initiative, why it exists, what it targets, and what is assumed |
| 8 min | PRD -> Rollout Plan -> Measurement Model | The product definition, execution path, and launch logic |
| 20 min | Discovery Synthesis -> Context Architecture Assessment -> Evaluation Plan | The problem diagnosis and the core product and model decisions |
| Deep dive | Follow the documents in order from 00 to 05 |

- Copilot answers high-value document questions with grounded references to the exact figure, table, or page that informed the answer.
- Users spend less time re-querying, manually re-describing visuals, or verifying whether the model hallucinated a number.
- The rollout improves trust without claiming impossible precision or hiding uncertainty when the source material is messy.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot becomes stronger at document-heavy analytical work without pretending to be a separate product.
