Summary

  • “Explore Ontario Data” → “Explore Provincial Data”
  • Added “Explore Municipal Data” (temporary link to /toronto)
  • Kept “Explore Federal Data” unchanged

Rationale

Aligns homepage with nested structure for Federal / Provincial / Municipal data views.
Prepares for future province selection and municipal expansion (Vancouver next).

Follow-up items

  • Add /provincial hub with province dropdown selector
  • Add year/budget selector under Federal section

@macoyj I'm getting an error when I click on "Explore Municipal data"

How were you envisioning a provincial hub (and eventually municipal hub) to look like?

@melkuo Sorry Melody delayed here. Looks like it's a href error on /Toronto I'll make adjustments after today. Ideally we have current landing explanation flipped for brief explanation of Federal, Prov etc. then have buttons changed out to get to Sankey.

It would be added later in URL but likely creates more scalability. Example:
/federal --> returns with 2 buttons like it is on main spending but with following links as necessary.
/federal/2024spend
/federal/2025budget

Blue sky would be having simple tree map to highlight provinces available at /provinces and /municipalities. If at scale then a timeline dropdown would be ideal.

Here's a pitch for a new idea:

  • What if the homepage had cards (not buttons) for up to ~6 spends. Could make it a bit more visual with background images of the city or province. Then, there's a button to View All.
  • Clicking View All would take you to a new page with all Spends, organized into federal, provincial or municipal. It could be cards on this page as well.

This seems like the most scalable solution while also providing a good user experience.

@melkuo it looks like it's the [lang] segment that broke the href=/toronto link, it obviously exists. Going to attempt that change, but your call on whether to ship.

Separately on this front, I've checked the /fr links and the buttons are redirecting to /en again. So do we have a replacement at scale we can put in there instead in the hrefs? The buttons also are hard coded language so all in English whether on /fr or /en. It looks like translation is also not in place for many of the spending pages headers and subtext.

Agree with cards suggestion, but would slow for shipping it and take more QA on how cards show up. Ideally card would show either:

  1. Name (Federal Fall Budget), Revenue, Spending, Delta (Surplus/Defecit)
  2. Name, Delta
  3. Name (with picture)

I'd lean towards 1. but could see how it would be cluttered. Could be nice to have conditional formatting outline or shadow colour based on the Delta.

@macoyj agreed – let's ship PR once the toronto href is fixed.

Can create a separate issue for the card improvement idea. My worry with #1 or #2 is that it becomes too text-heavy. The homepage already is a bit bland. I could be easily convinced depending on how it looks though!
