Clean PR not including any general-use fertility improvements, i.e. this is ONLY for any work towards full pidp retention and using full synthpop as input population for fertility write-up. Supersedes PR #439 following branch name change to full-retention-for-synthpop, i.e. not linked to any specific issue. Ultimately unlikely to be merged with development but so far fully up to date with it.
