Reduce boilerplate and facilitate implementing the same `message()` treatment in the next commit.
This allows callers to access the internal string representation and do a minimum of introspection on different error types. This is a "better than nothing" workaround until we eventually achieve totally transparent error types so callers can actually match on variants.
