Partially addresses #154 by removing parenthetical information from participant names, and removing superfluous whitespace.
This is a fairly simple fix, and there are probably other special characters that we could clean, but I don't want to run the risk of potentially butchering real names by (for example) only limiting to ascii alphabetic... and I think the likelihood of that coming up is relatively low.
