Throughout this project there are 3 major tasks that you will complete. Details for each of these tasks are listed below.

Task 1:

Complete the E$$ential Medicine$ challenges and document the process in your GitHub journal (this should be completed in your own journal under the issues tab). You should each complete the whole set of challenges for 5 of the essential medicines listed below and that are available from the drop down in the challenges (note there is no drop down tab in the News Flash challenge). You should start with a medicine and work your way through the challenges before moving on to the next medicine.

  1. medroxyprogesterone acetate
  2. carbetocin
  3. clozapine
  4. diazepam
  5. methadone
  6. insulin
  7. fluoxetine
  8. digoxin
  9. warfarin
  10. amlodipine
  11. nifurtimox
  12. testosterone
  13. praziquantel
  14. ivermectin
  15. dexamethasone
  16. rifabutin
  17. levonorgestrel
  18. carbamazepine

In your journal take note of what you have learned, what insights you have gained, your emotions while doing the challenges, and anything else that you find interesting while completing these challenges.

You should be posting every step of the way. Your journal doesn’t have to be perfect. It is more important to include as much detail as possible for later reflections.

The journal should include detailed explanations of:

  • What you have done (e.g. what search terms you used? How you determined which website to use?) You can check out this blog for some inspiration.
  • What you have learned in each step of the process. This could be new knowledge, a new understanding into how a system works, external factor that influence science or any else you’ve learned or experienced.
  • Self reflection on the process.

For more insight on reflective writing visit the wiki page on reflective writing.

Once you have finished the challenges for one medicine repeat this process for the next medicine again taking detailed notes in your journal.

After you have completed the challenges for 5 different essential medicine, it’s time to reflect on your journal. How has your learning process changed throughout the challenges? Has it changed? What did you find difficult? What did you find easy?

Task 2:

After you have completed the challenges and your journal, you will read the journals of your peers keeping an eye out of other peoples insights into learning processes. Are they the same as you own, or different? After you’ve had a chance to read other’s journals you will bring together the ways in which people learn and process information through a group discussion. You can start the discussion using the GitHub ‘comment’ feature commenting on your peers journals (remember to maintain a respectful and meaningful conversation!) as well a larger group discussion that will be held with the group leaders and project supervisors.

You will need to pick a couple of learning dimensions from the project journals and discussions that takes your interest. These will be carried through to the next task.

Task 3:

In the final task you will take what you now know about the way in which people learn and process information putting it to work to create a new resource that will improve the challenges and make them easier for anyone to take on. More details on this task and the expected outcome is available here. This task will be completed in teams of two.
