Welcome to the Github repository of the Digital Research Aids project. This project was set up by the Expert Centre Restitution of the NIOD Institute of War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in conjunction with the Colonial Collections Consortium. The Digital Research Aids are part of the Colonial Collections Datahub and assist early-career researchers in doing (provenance) research on colonial collections. The research aids contain information about conducting research on objects that were acquired in a colonial context and which are currently part of museum collections in the Netherlands.
Below you find information about how this Github repository relates to the frontend and how to create and edit research aids.
This repository and the intellectual work (aka data) it contains are published under a CC-BY-SA license (more information in the deed).
In brief, this means that you are allowed to freely use and adapt its contents in your own work as long as you attribute the original authors appropriately and share it as part of the Creative Commons as well.
This is a development repository for collaboratively designing and integrating the research guides from NIOD into the Datahub. The core of the approach is to treat the research aids as data, which means structuring them and the texts they contain as much as possible for parsing, automatic ingestion into and linking with the Datahub and its front-end applications.
The Level 0, or Toplevel research aid acts as dataprovider for the landing page and is therefore different then research aids on level 1, 2 and 3. The content of the Level 0 yaml-file relates to the frontend as follows:

Content:-section that starts at line 7, relates to the introductory text on the landing page of the frontend. This text currently contains a disclaimer about the changeability of the website and an introduction to the website. - The
Breakdown:-section that starts at line 18 provides the structure for the frontend and contains three lists:- The list
"Provenance research into colonial collections":containing the research aids of level 1 - The list
"Themes and categories":containing the thematic level 2 research aids, that in itself are lists for relevant level 3 research aids - The list
"Locations":containing the region focussed level 2 research aids

The listings can be amended to the prefered order, there are is no standard rule. When no specific order is preferred, stick to an alphabetical order.
The research aids on level 1 consist of general texts about writing provenance reports, the landscape of heritage institutions and other introductory materials. Due to their general nature, there are only few such documents and they contain mainly text. Although the yaml files of level 1 research aids follow a certain structure, this is less strict than for research aids on level 2 and 3. The second tier of the hierarchy is made up of descriptions of broad topics, major actors and concepts in the colonial context, such as the Dutch colonial army. Guides on this level will be a main point of entry into the Datahub and provide context. There will be several dozens of such guides and they are thus treated as data, an example translation into YAML can be found in Leger_en_Marine.yaml.
Finally, on the third level, there is additional information about specific entities, actors and concepts related to and active in the colonial context. These guides are data already from their origin, as there can be arbitrarily many, and they should be treated as such, i.e. live next to/in the data in the Datahub. An example of the Kunsthandel van Lier guide translated into YAML is Kunsthandel_van_Lier.yam;l.
