With many tools - including Emacs’ gptel package - it is possible to switch LLMs at will in a single document/conversation. One very interesting use that some people have discovered is to start a deep investigative conversation with a big complex (expensive) model like o3 or sonnet-3.7, then switch to a much lighter and possibly self-hosted model. The context from the output of the smarter model seems to significantly improve the smaller model’s subsequent responses.
With reasoning and tool use, I have started experimenting with offering the LLM help with its “memory” - suggesting that when its cognitive load starts becoming burdensome, that it summarizes what it wants to remember, and then ask me the putative human to delete the original pre-summarized content from our conversation. I have tried proposing that this is similar to what humans do that makes their brains so effective - so far, I’ve had promising results with that approach. Even a ver large context model like the
