I implemented your sugestion. I don't see, why this shouln't work, if a subset of attributes is fetched. ldap.LDAP_MOD_REPLACE is a per attribute operation, so attributes which aren't mentioned, won't be touched.
Btw. the code supports fetching a subset of attributes: the parameter retrieve_attributes of search is passed to _raw_search
