This project is a dual band HF CW transceiver . Historically, many transceivers with NE602 mixers and an LM386 have looked broadly similar in their circuit, but given a unique name. I feel I must declare this this transceiver is heavily influenced by 2 many existing designs. The Norcal NC2030 and the KD1JV series of MTR rigs.
The goal with this project was a high performance receiver with a Class E transmitter for high efficiency. A compact design also became a key focus. There are some standout designs that must be mentioned as influencing this radio even if indirectly;
-
W7EL optimized QRP transceiver This still remains very relevant for setting a standard in terms of a compact transceiver and also demonstrates the balance that must be considered in design decisions for such a radio.
-
KD1JV AT Sprint There is something quite magic with a QRP transceiver in an Altoids tin. I considered an approach along these lines, but I wanted the whole station to be as contained as possible and not have lots of wires.

W7ZOI has authored many articles and books, each with great photos of QRP radios being used in the mountains. The approach to design set out in these books influenced by approach to design and experimenting with this design.
Why the name Firecrest? On the theme of small and compact, the firecrest is one of the smallest birds found in the UK.
