I started learning Ruby by going through the Ruby Koans. I love the Koans concepts that walked me through the path of eligtenment in Ruby. The most interesting part of Koans, personally to me, is not the Ruby language but the Koan messages themself. They made my process of learning Ruby more fun and enjoyable.
Below are some of the Koans messages that I found interesting:
- You have not yet reached enlightenment.
- Please meditate on the following code: ...
- I sense frustration. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
- Do not lose hope.
- You are progressing. Excellent.
- mountains are merely mountains
- learn the rules so you know how to break them properly
- remember that silence is sometimes the best answer
- sleep is the best meditation
- when you lose, don't lose the lesson
- things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise
These zenlike statements made the learning process more easier. I had some feeling with the Ruby language through it!
A weirdo interesting book to learn Ruby, especially the way its author explained concepts in Ruby.
The book is created by _why the lucky stiff, a mysterious figure in the Ruby community. One of his most famous quotes is “When you don’t create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. Your tastes only narrow and exclude people. So create”.
