Road Accident Analysis Dashboard

Overview

This project analyzes road accident casualties across 2021–2022 with a focus on severity, vehicle group, road type, road surface condition, urban vs rural patterns, and light conditions.
The goal is to deliver a clear, decision-ready Excel dashboard that helps stakeholders quickly identify high-volume areas for safety intervention.

  • Total casualties analyzed: 417,882
  • Severity distribution:
    • Fatal: 3,953
    • Serious: 40,740
    • Slight: 263,279
  • Vehicle contribution:
    • Cars: 78% (325,921)
    • Other vehicles: 22% (91,961)
  • Context patterns:
    • Urban: 61.2% (255,900)
    • Rural: 38.8% (162,000)
    • Daylight: 73% (305,000)
    • Dark: 27% (112,900)

What I Did

  • Cleaned and prepared the dataset for analysis.
  • Built PivotTables to aggregate casualties by:
    • severity, vehicle group, road type, surface condition, location, and light condition.
  • Used calculated fields / measures to derive KPI totals and percentage shares.
  • Built PivotCharts aligned with each business question.
  • Designed a streamlined dashboard layout for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Documented insights and recommendations in a concise PowerPoint narrative.

Insights

  • Slight injuries account for the majority of overall casualties.
  • Car-related incidents drive the largest share of casualties, representing the biggest opportunity for volume reduction.
  • Single carriageways contribute the highest casualty volume among road types.
  • High casualty counts in dry/daylight conditions likely reflect exposure volume.
  • Urban areas show higher casualty volumes than rural areas.

Recommendations

  • Prioritize interventions focused on:
    • reducing car-related risks through targeted safety campaigns and enforcement.
    • engineering and monitoring high-volume single carriageway segments.
    • addressing wet/seasonal hazards with proactive public messaging and road maintenance.
