Instrument locations
Implementation details of these things still being determined.
- Anemometer
- Celiometer - calculate, or implement Binocular Fisheye Cloud Photogrammetry?
- Microwave proximity sensor - TBC (unlikely)
- Pluviometer (quantitive) - TBC (pending decision on disdrometer implementation)
- SIM/SD cards - how should these be accessed?
- USB-C - likely needs to be accessible from ground facing module :/
- Antennas - connectors likely to be at bottom of air quality module
Sky-facing photonics & heliotropic platter
Must be moisture-free to prevent optical dome from misting/freezing, ideally hermetically sealed. Possibly need some way to vent excess heat (over 75°C) - maybe a rubber sphincter like on ketchup bottles?
Note: While there's lots of sensors in this module, the actual number of components used to implement them will likely be far fewer. For example, components used for daytime sensing will also cater to the needs of twilight and nighttime sensing.
- Bhangmeter (optical)
- probably not on heliotropic platter
- Celiometer
- TBC
- can this be implemented with single camera that gets moved to different positions via heliotropic platter?
- Diluculumphotometer
- likely on heliotropic platter
- Emitters
- ring of IR / white LEDs
- Fulmenometer (optical)
- Heliophotometer
- on heliotropic platter
- Heliospectrometer
- on heliotropic platter
- Infragrammeter
- on heliotropic platter
- Nitorometer
- on heliotropic platter
- Oktameter (thermopile)
- Will likely need 4+ sensors facing different quadrants of the sky
- Pluviometer (qualitative)
- rainlight sensor detects rain and provides qualitative summary of amount
- not on heliotropic platter
- Pyranometer
- likely on heliotropic platter
- Pyrheliometer
- on heliotropic platter
- Rangefinder
- on heliotropic platter
- must be capable of scanning horizontal plane around sensor array
- must be capable of scanning area above sensor array
- Thermograph
- on heliotropic platter
- Thermometer
- UV Radiometer (sky facing)
Gas & PM sensing, CPU, telemetry
Must limit/prevent moisture to prevent internal optics from misting/freezing. Likely to require hydrophobic filters on air inlets.
Note: Processing & telemetry could be separated in to separate module if required.
- Bhangometer (ionising radiation)
- reuse dosimeter if it can be made to detect x-rays or separate x-ray burst sensor?
- CPU, RAM & Telemetry
- Dosimeter (beta, gamma, muon)
- upper UV ionising radiation detected by UV radiometer in photonics module
- Dry-bulb thermometer
- Fulmenometer (VLF EM)
- might move this to ground facing
- it could be adversely affected by EMI noise from telemetry and associated wires)
- Gas Spectrophotometer (or whatever it ends up being)
- GPS
- Nephelometer
- TBC
- SDR
- TBC
- Thermometer
Direct contact with atmosphere, low EMI
- IMU - accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer
- affected by motors in photonics heliotrope
- Barometer
- doubles up as an infasound sensor
- Bhangometer (infrasound and incident EM)
- infrasound = barometer
- incident em = bolometer
- Bolometer
- affected by motors in photronics heliotrope
- affected by EMI from processor and telemetry
- Disdrometer
- TBC - possibly a rear-facing IR TOF camera
- Dosimeter (alpha)
- Emitters
- neopixel ring
- rear-facing IR for disdrometer?
- Flagrometer
- needs to be away from Stevenson Screen heat plume?
- possibly allow adjustment of sensor positions?
- Fulmenometer (sonic)
- TBC
- Hygrometer
- Leaf Wetness
- TBC
- Oktameter (peltier-seebeck)
- Measures at night, TEG during day
- Could potentially double up as piezo disdrometer/pluviometer?
- Will need unobstructed view of sky and ground
- Pyrgeometer
- ensure no incident sunlight from sky during sunrise/sunset
- Scintillometer
- TBC
- Soundmeter
- one or several mics?
- ideally ultrasound capable
- barometer can be used for infrasound
- Speaker/Sounder
- Likely piezoelectric buzzer
- Thermometer & Thermopile
- UV Radiometer (ground facing)
- ensure no incident sunlight from sky during sunrise/sunset
- Albedometer - derived from Pyranometer/Pyrgeometer
