@hao-yu Sorry for the delayed review, this got lost in the pile somehow. Could you add a changelog entry for this? Just a little bit of description inside CHANGES/2041.bugfix, and also fix the one small formatting issue (see the lint CI check)? We can merge and release immediately thereafter

After thorough discussion and playing through all the scenarios is a Gedankenexperiment, we concluded that this is exactly the correct way so fix.
