Introduction

The Decentralized Voting Application is designed to provide a secure and transparent platform for conducting elections and polls. By leveraging blockchain technology, the application ensures that each vote is immutable, verifiable, and anonymous, eliminating the risk of fraud and manipulation. This system is ideal for organizations seeking to implement fair and reliable voting mechanisms.

Installation

To set up the project locally, follow these steps:

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/pushpakrai/Blockchain-Voting-Application.git
  2. Navigate to the project directory:

    cd Blockchain-Voting-Application
  3. Install dependencies:

    npm install

Smart Contract Deployment

Before running the application, you need to compile and deploy the Solidity smart contract to a blockchain network.

  1. Compile the smart contract:

    npx hardhat compile
  2. Deploy the contract:

npx hardhat run --network volta scripts/deploy.js
  3. Update the .env file: Add the following environment variables to your .env file:

    • PRIVATE_KEY: Your wallet's private key.
    • CONTRACT_ADDRESS: The address of the deployed contract.
    • BLOCKCHAIN_ENDPOINT: The URL of the blockchain network.
  4. Modify the Hardhat Config (if necessary): If you're using a different blockchain network, update the network endpoint in the hardhat.config.js file to reflect the network's URL.

Running the Application

Once the smart contract is deployed and the necessary environment variables are configured, you can start the frontend application.

  1. Start the application:

    npm start
  2. Access the interface: Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000 to interact with the decentralized voting platform.

Voting Process

The Decentralized Voting Application facilitates a seamless and secure voting process through the following steps:

  1. User Authentication:

    • Users connect their Ethereum wallet (e.g., MetaMask) to the application.
    • Authentication is handled via the wallet, ensuring that each voter is uniquely identified without revealing personal information.
  2. Casting a Vote:

    • Users select the candidate or option they wish to vote for.
    • Upon confirmation, a transaction is created and sent to the Ethereum blockchain.
    • The vote is recorded on the blockchain through a smart contract, ensuring immutability and transparency.
  3. Vote Verification:

    • Each vote is verifiable on the blockchain, allowing users to confirm that their vote has been counted.
    • The decentralized nature of the blockchain ensures that votes cannot be altered or tampered with once cast.
  4. Displaying Results:

    • Real-time results are fetched from the blockchain and displayed on the frontend.
    • The transparent system allows stakeholders to monitor the voting process and verify the results independently.

Frontend

The frontend of the Decentralized Voting Application is built using React.js and provides an intuitive interface for users to interact with the voting system. Key features include:

  • Voting Interface:

    • Display of voting options and candidates.
    • User-friendly buttons to cast votes.
  • Real-Time Results:

    • Live updates of voting results as votes are cast.
    • Visual representation of data using charts and graphs.
  • User Dashboard:

    • Overview of the user's voting history.
    • Ability to verify individual votes on the blockchain.
  • Security Features:

    • Secure connection to the user's Ethereum wallet.
    • Protection against unauthorized access and fraudulent activities.

The frontend source code is located in the client directory.

Architecture

The Decentralized Voting Application is structured with the following key technologies:

  • Hardhat: A development environment for Ethereum smart contracts that facilitates testing, deployment, and contract interaction.
  • Solidity (Smart Contracts): Manages the voting process, including vote casting, verification, and result tallying.
  • React.js: Provides a responsive and user-friendly interface for voters to interact with the application.
  • Web3.js: Enables communication between the frontend and the Ethereum blockchain.
  • MetaMask: Serves as the wallet interface for users to authenticate and interact with the blockchain.

Components

  1. Smart Contracts:

    • Located in the contracts directory.
    • Handles the core voting logic and ensures the integrity of the voting process.
  2. Frontend:

    • Located in the client directory.
    • Built with React.js, it interacts with the smart contracts via Web3.js to facilitate voting and display results.
  3. Deployment Scripts:

    • Located in the scripts directory.
    • Automates the deployment of smart contracts to the blockchain network.
