I ran into some strange errors some time ago when attempting to write to a las file. The problem was that the pack function was accepting a bytes argument and attempting to convert a bytes object into a bytes object, causing the error. To fix this, I added a conditional that checks if the object is already bytes, and if so returns the object.
The error is resolved and I have had no issues writing to las files since.
