Hi. In USNF97 there was a "Realistic Targeting" feature in the options.
When you turned it on, you lost the target if it went into your back hemisphere. And also introduced other restrictions, making the game more interesting.
There are pieces of code in fa.exe, and it seems to me that the developers simply forgot to add it to the main menu.
Do you think it is realistic to include it?
I tried to study ea.cfg but it is in some kind of encrypted form.

Good question! So far I've mostly focused on reverse engineering the assets rather than the game mechanics. I was rather hoping these sorts of questions were already answered and well known so that I could stay out of the main FA executable.

I believe that the menu is stored in the MNU files, which are fairly standard PE containers. There might be something in there that could help, but I haven't taken the time to dive in yet.
