Tagging CD Rips with data from MusicBrainz

The focus of pml tool is the almost automatic ripping, encoding and tagging of musical works that are only a subset of tracks on a disc or are spread over more than one disc. It supports recordings that are identified by composer, title and performer.

Caveat

If you only want to perform one-to-one encoding of entire CDs with tagging based on MusicBrainz, most options of pml are probably overkill.

On the other hand, pml currently uses cdparanoia for ripping only with the default options. Other tools will probably be more sophisticated.

Typical workflow:

1. Explore the choices for directories, files and tags with pml edit. In this example we extract Shostakovich's 12th symphony on tracks 4 to 7 from a CD that contains the 2nd symphony on the first three tracks. Note that we have to help pml a bit with the title of the work, because the common prefix of the track titles extends to the roman numeral 'I' starting the movements. We also have to specify the MBID of the medium, because there is more than one match in the MusicBrainz database.
