The MNIST example hangs

Most likely, you are missing libjni.so in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH. You can set this by adding -shell_env LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/java/latest/jre/lib/amd64/server (adapt for your Java environment) to the launch command.
