I think we ended up with k = 9 here?

It was originally k = 16 in the older version of the vignette; possibly chosen arbitrarily. With estimation, the k values does change to k = 9 because the s(nodeID, by = group, bs = "fs") formulation. Do you want to change it to k = 9 in another PR?
